The case needed more cleaning. I cleaned it in a bath of kerosene, washed it down with detergent solution, and finally rinsed with clean water. I dried it and put some oil on the bearing surfaces to make sure they wouldn't corrode. The reason for this cleaning is not just cosmetic; it's difficult to keep the internals clean on reassembly when the case is scuzzy and bits of crud are continually falling off it.
