These could be stripped almost completely by simply peeling off the old coating. The inside was not peeling, but its coating could be removed easily with a little scraping. Many of the sheet metal bits could be stripped similarly, by just peeling off the old powder coating. Most of the sheet metal bits looked like this, with a greater or lesser amount of rust speckling. It required only a light sanding to take off any loose rust.
