I cut two slots in each joint with a Dremel tool; you can see part of one slot to the left of the clamp. Now, the clamp can pull the sides of the pipe inward to form a tight joint. Of course, there is a possibility of some slight leakage through the slot, but certainly much less than the previous loose joint would have allowed.
