I sanded the pieces a little more and painted them successfully. Most received two coats, and they look fine. A few that are more visible will be sanded lightly (400 grit paper) and given a final coat, so they are really smooth and shiny. I left them in the sun to bake for an afternoon, so they should be ready for sanding by evening.
