The Porsche transmission is a little different from those of other cars. The synchro assembly includes "energizer bands," which are forced against the synchro band during a shift, tightening the band against the slider. This system provides a more positive synchro action than the simpler arrangements in most other transmissions. Gears 2-5 have bidirectional energizers; that is, they work on both upshifts and downshifts (even though you never downshift into fifth). First gear (next picture) has only a single energizer.
