Case Part Number

casepartnumber.jpg

This is the Porsche part number for the transmission case, not the entire transmission (as many assume). This case was used on both 911s and 912s until 1969, when magnesium cases were substituted. Four-cylinder 914s have a different case, whose part no. begins with 914, and their stamped designation is either 914/11 or 914/12. The internals of all these transmissions are fundamentally the same, with minor and obvious differences, such as shift-rod configuration. Of course, the various cars have different gearing, and for any particular car model, a number of gear-ratio options were available by special order. The gears are interchangeable among transmissions, with a few caveats; for example, the fixed second gear (in five-speeds, first gear in four-speeds) is part of the input shaft, so changing the ratio requires replacing the shaft. Shafts with nonstandard ratios are now very difficult to find.
