When I removed the shifter to install new control wires for the heater, I discovered some light rust in the longitudinal "tunnel" that houses the various cables and controls that go from the car's front to its rear. The rust is in a low spot, where water has collected, probably because the drain hole got plugged by debris. I fixed this by scraping off loose rust, vacuuming up the rust and other debris, coating with Eastwood rust converter, and finally painting.
